Used Tyre Disposal

Pioneering Eco-Friendly Practices with Our Tyre Disposal Service

At Bearcat Tyres, we are committed to supporting New Zealand’s efforts to reduce waste and protect the environment. Our used tyre disposal service ensures that all end-of-life tyres (EOLT) are processed in line with New Zealand’s latest tyre disposal regulations. As of September 2023, new regulations under the Waste Minimisation Act ensure that tyre importers, retailers, and other participants take responsibility for preventing tyres from ending up in landfills or harming the environment.

As a founding member of the Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme (TPSS) for Off-Highway Tyres (OHT), Bearcat guarantees responsible recycling and disposal of tyres through certified collectors and recyclers.

Bearcat NZ is also proud to be part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first regulated product stewardship scheme, led by Tyrewise.

New Zealand’s Latest Tyre Disposal Regulations (2023 Update)

In September 2023, new tyre disposal regulations were introduced under the Waste Minimisation (Tyres) Regulation 2023. These regulations ensure that end-of-life tyres are processed in ways that contribute to a circular economy, turning tyre waste into valuable resources for reuse in construction, manufacturing, and other industries.

The regulation requires all parties involved in the tyre supply chain, including importers, retailers, collectors, and processors, to act in accordance with Tyrewise. This means tyres must be responsibly recycled or repurposed instead of ending up in landfills.

Key aspects of the new regulation:

  • Tyre Stewardship Fee: As of 1 March 2024, a fee of $6.65 + GST per EPU applies to all regulated tyres. This fee replaces previous disposal charges and ensures transparent pricing across the supply chain.
  • Full Implementation of Tyrewise (Now Active): As of 1 September 2024, Tyrewise is fully operational. This means that collections of end-of-life tyres from registered retailers and collection sites are underway, with incentive payments also available for eligible products.

By staying compliant with these regulations, Bearcat Tyres ensures that customers have access to sustainable tyre disposal solutions in New Zealand.

We can collaborate with local councils to gather wheels from communities committed to reducing their environmental footprint. Contact our team to learn about used tyre disposal and pickup to mitigate illegal dumping in most areas.

Make a Significant Impact with Used Tyre Disposal

As part of our commitment to responsible recycling, Bearcat is a proud founder of the OHT Levy Contributors, in partnership with Michelin. This initiative places a levy on every tyre sold, which is then used to fund research into new ways to repurpose tyre materials. With $8 million already allocated, these projects are creating new solutions for tyre waste management, such as:
  • Using tyres in fuel production for cement kilns.
  • Development of rubber materials for playground surfaces and roads.
  • Exploring pyrolysis for energy recovery.
Our efforts are helping reduce the number of tyres ending up in landfills while supporting the creation of new, environmentally friendly products.
